History of the North Jersey Locksmith Association

 Things have certainly changed in the 50 years of the NJMLA.

The NJMLA was formed in 1955 by a group of locksmiths from Hudson and Bergen Counties. These locksmiths had developed friendships amongst themselves and wished to organize an informal gathering of the areas craftsmen. There was at the time a statewide locksmith association but these individuals wanted a more regional representation.

It is interesting to note that at this point in time, locksmithing was still a somewhat secretive trade. Most shops were small family owned and operated establishments. The secrets of the trade were well kept. Amazingly though, these competing locksmiths were not only on friendly terms but were willing to share trade and business affairs openly.

As in 1955,the spirit of education, comradery, friendly competition, and self-help are still evident at our monthly meetings. We are a trade association with strong social ties. We are concerned with how are members interact, as well as with the technical aspects of the trade. We feel a trade association should be built with friendly professionals who have common interests; in this case the security industry, and not of individuals with adversarial conflicts.

In the following years the association has grown to include security professionals from Middlesex County to Rockland County NY, and to the Boroughs of New York City.

Our membership has grown from the owners of a few family run businesses, to an apprentice program for new employees, to train them to give you the best protection possible.  We also have members that are representatives of manufacturers and distributors. These members keep us informed of new products to help keep you, the consumer, up-to-date with the newest and safest products on the markets today.

With the new Locksmith License Law in New Jersey, all locksmiths in the state will be required to carry a valid license. You can be sure, all our member locksmiths are licensed and new apprentices will be required to obtain a license as soon as they are eligible
